Led by Native Americans, hundreds of Sisters of Mercy walked for water through downtown Buffalo on 23 June 2017.
Once everyone returned to the Chapter room, several local government officials recognized the sisters' powerful witness to the human right to water. Maria Maybee, a member of the Senaca Nation, spoke passionately about her work as a Water Walker.
Following the speeches, Sisters blended waters from their native lands in a moving ceremony in the center of the Chapter room. The ritual concluded with everyone in the Chapter body being blessed with the mingled waters, as ceremony leaders walked about the room sprinkling water on participants with clusters of leaves.
