Mercy student leaders gather for sustainability

On 4 April, two Mercy schools in Melbourne held a day for student leaders of sustainability initiatives facilitated by Rahamim educators Sally Neaves and Juliet Talarico.

Students from Academy of Mary Immaculate, Fitzroy, and Our Lady of Mercy College, Heidelberg, gathered at Academy to learn about the story of Earth and the universe, reflect on this time in Earth’s history, grieve Earth’s destruction, and plan imaginative action in their school communities.

These passionate and knowledgeable students planned exciting actions to address urgent issues of our time, such as increasing vegetarian options and decreasing plastic waste in canteens, addressing the climate emergency through trans-disciplinary learning units in the curriculum, and organising school-wide public awareness campaigns to reduce carbon emissions.
